Tools

Specialty tools are what set shop mechanics apart from shade tree home mechaincs. These tools may add expense, but pay for themselves in saved labor costs (from extra time trying to make the wrong tool work or fixing the damage they do) in just two uses. Loan them to your trusted friends for a small fee or buy them as a group to share. I don't sell junk, that's why the chain tools are expensive. You get what you pay for. One customer bought lower quality chain tools and the breaker expired on its first use.

Specialty tools save labor and prevent damage to your equipment.

There are really only a few "special tools" just for Ducatis that you have to buy and I list them at the bottom.

  • Suspension tools to work on upside down (USD) forks on GSXRs and Ducatis. While the Duck 900SSs have 41mm forks, the fork seal driver is the only part that is partially specific.
ItemSupplierDescriptionPart number
A Suzuki "Holder, front fork" to fit in the holes in the spacer and use it pull down the spring and spacer. The next step is to slide the plate in between the spacer and the nut. 09940-94930
B Suzuki "Damper rod plate" Slides under the locknut that fixes the damper rod to the fork cap, keeping the spacer and spring compressed so you can work on the top of the fork. After putting this in, you remove the fork cap. Discontinued
C Suzuki "Damper rod holder" Is threaded on both ends. Screw it on the damper rod after you remove the fork cap, then remove the plate, spacer, and spring. Tape over the top of this tool and use it to stroke the rod to bleed the cartridge. The tape keeps fork oil off the ceiling and your clothes and hair. 09940-52841
D White Brothers "Professional fork oil level tool (adj. for depth)" Set the plate to the desired depth on the pipe and draw the excess oil out of the forks. 34-053
E White Brothers "Race Tech fork seal driver tool - 41mm" Split design allows you to drive your new fork seal into place. 11-530

  • Chain tools Use the tools here to properly remove old chains, "cut" your new chain to length, and install "riveting link" master links. We have started selling the Motion Pro combo tool which does both... (img) Look for it in the catalog on final drive pages.

A "Super ratchet chain breaker" This incredible tool won't tweak or break like cheaper tools. Discontinued $na
B "RK chain tools" Use this mini set of tools to press together master links and expand the pins on rivet-type master links. RK000000 $59

  • Feeler Gauges Originally designed for ATVs and Hondas with threaded locknut adjusters under the inspection cap, these are very useful for measuring the Ducati four valver's clearances. One tool has .002" and .003", the next has .004" and .005", and the third has .006" and .008". Sold as a 3 pack for $11.99. PC008052-4

  • Clutch Holder tool The angled parts lock into the splines in a clutch hub and is required to properly torque the clutch hub nut or remove it without an air impact. There are round pins on the opposite side to lock into other clutch hubs or Honda alternators. Southern PC005018 $29
  • Single sided wheel tool Required to balance the rear wheel of the 916, this is also used for the new Triumphs and RC45. Not sure if it would work for the VFR. This particular design has a very wide pitch thread allowing the tool to be screwed together quickly. Limited availability, $219.

Special tools for Ducati

A. Crankshaft turning tool Also can hold a degree wheel. This bolts to the left end of the crankshaft and has tabs that lock into the slots there. Southern DS002044 $54

B. Belt pulley removal and holding tool This strange tool has two parts. The outer part has pins that fit into the belt pulley's holes and has a tab for you to fit a pipe over. The inner part fits the nut perfectly and has a 1/2" socket welded to the back of it. You need a pipe for your ratchet, too. These are constructed using tool steel and won't break like homemade contraptions will. Update Ducati has revised this tool so that the handle on the outer ring is roughly 12" long. Ducati 887.005.644 $159

Most anything can be done on a Ducati with the same tools that you use in the line of motorcycle repair. The next time your Ducati mechanic cries about $3000 of tools, he's really crying about being lame. The only tool that is genuinely costly is a shim set. Considering that most Ducati dealers won't take old shims in on trade and they sell for twice what they paid, they'll get their money back out of them. And if you want a shim set, I can special order you a 4V one for $1299 and a 2V one for $1999.
